Background
Neurological conditions often affect individuals differently and require ongoing, progressive training of the skills restricted by the condition in order to relearn them and reprogramme the brain. In the treatment of patients with cognitive and sensorimotor deficits, the MEDIAN Group is piloting the use of virtual reality to optimise treatment.
Research and studies
Studies on the use of VR therapy in neurology or neurorehabilitation are extensive and show promising results. Studies have shown that VR therapy can help to improve the physical abilities and cognitive functions of patients with neurological conditions. Studies have also shown that the immersive nature of VR therapy can increase patient motivation and engagement, leading to better rehabilitation outcomes. Although further research is needed to confirm the long-term effectiveness and benefits of VR therapy in neurology, studies to date indicate that it is a promising addition to conventional rehabilitation treatments.
Product and partner
We are piloting software call CUREO which offers modular training units, and over 50 different training sessions, to support cognitive and sensorimotor rehabilitation in a playful way.
It encourages the use of an individual's upper extremities and torso. The product can be integrated into existing rehabilitation programmes in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and neuropsychology.
A special feature of this product is ‘hand tracking’. Here, the VR glasses recognise the user's own hands so that exercises are carried out with the user's own hands and not via a controller. The transfer to everyday movements is then easier to work towards.
Objectives and target group
The objective of using myReha in neurology is to offer it to patients who are at the end of their medical rehabilitation. This innovative therapy option is increasing patient motivation and improving the quality of care. It is intended to be used both in individual settings and in group therapy.
Innovative aspect
The use of virtual reality (VR) therapy in neurology offers an innovative approach to the rehabilitation of patients with neurological conditions. By simulating real environments and activities, patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson's disease or multiple sclerosis can improve their physical abilities and train their cognitive functions. The immersive nature of VR therapy allows patients to practice in a safe and controlled environment, leading to increased motivation and engagement. In addition, VR therapy can be individualised to meet the specific needs of each patient and make the rehabilitation process more effective.
Pilot testing and implementation
The pilot project ‘VR-supported therapy in neurology’ is carried out in 5 MEDIAN clinics:
- MEDIAN Klinik NRZ Magdeburg
- MEDIAN Klinik Wilhelmshaven
- MEDIAN Klinik Bad Tennstedt
- MEDIAN Klinik Grünheide
- MEDIAN Klinik Bernkastel-Kues Burg Landshut
